What is Trust?

Psalm 31:1a, “In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust;”

What is Trust? The 1828 dictionary says:  Trust is confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind in the integrity, veracity, justice of another.  To place confidence in; to rely on.

Good definition – this is how God desires for us to live. He wants us to:

  • Have confidence in Him apart from our ‘logic’ and need to understand. Proverbs 3:5,6 cannot be any clearer. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”Believe that God is working. Trust that He will work out all the details of a situation in His time.
  • Rely on His mercies and promises. Rely means to have a conviction and certainty in the ability of someone to do what they say.   God’s Word is sure and forever settled in Heaven. If He promises something, you can be sure He will do it. Romans 4:21 says, “And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”
  • Rest in our hearts and minds. Stress and rest cannot coincide with each other. Trust always produces a resting of the mind because you KNOW that God is taking care of the matter. Psalm 37:7a says, “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him:”

Trust is leaving a matter with God and not digging it up every other minute. Trust is having confidence in God and relying on Him with rest in your heart because you know He is in control.
